The U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a notice in the Federal Register confirming that the Temporary Protected Status designation for Lebanon has been automatically extended for six months, from May 28, 2026, through November 27, 2026, after the agency did not make a required determination at least 60 days before the prior designation was set to expire.

Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, if the Secretary of Homeland Security does not determine whether a foreign state continues to meet the conditions for TPS designation at least 60 days before the expiration of the current designation, the period of designation is automatically extended for six months. The prior Lebanon TPS designation was scheduled to expire on May 27, 2026.

According to the Federal Register notice, "Rapidly unfolding events in Lebanon in March 2026 impacted the Department's ability to conduct a thorough review of prevailing country conditions for the Secretary's timely consideration and determination." The notice was published by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the DHS component that administers the TPS program.

The automatic extension means that existing TPS beneficiaries from Lebanon may retain their protected status through November 27, 2026, provided they continue to meet all eligibility requirements. The extension also automatically extends the validity of previously issued Employment Authorization Documents for the same six-month period, the notice states.

Lebanon was first designated for TPS in November 2024. That original designation, published at 89 FR 93641, required beneficiaries to have been continuously residing in the United States since October 16, 2024, and continuously physically present since November 27, 2024.

The Federal Register notice reminds current TPS beneficiaries that the Secretary intends to review conditions in Lebanon no later than 60 days before the new expiration date and decide whether to extend or terminate the designation. "During this period, beneficiaries are encouraged to prepare for their return to Lebanon, including requesting updated travel documents from the government of Lebanon, in the event Lebanon's TPS designation is not extended again and if they have no other lawful basis for remaining in the United States," the notice states.

No new registration is required for the automatic extension. Beneficiaries who wish to obtain a new EAD card with the updated expiration date of November 27, 2026, may file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, with the appropriate fee, according to the notice.
